Ars Boni et Aequi

In the Editorial of the first issue of the Journal, former Dean Sergio Gaete said:

“The name chosen, ‘Ars Boni et Aequi’, taken from the definition of Law offered by Celsus in Justinian’s Corpus Iuris Civilis, is no chance.  

On the one part, by remembering that the nature of our study is the ‘science of the good and the equitable’, we have tried to highlight that, despite the specific knowledge of any subject normally refer to eminently ‘technical’ matters, it may never be forgotten that every human activity, and, indeed, legal activity, has to be grounded on solid and omnipresent values. This last tenet represents the deepest conviction with wich our University faces its educative mission.

On the other part, by choosing this ancient and authoritative Celsus’s quotation, we have tried also to underline the essential universality of Legal Science. This universality -an inescapable requirement of its scientific nature- makes indispensable the study of all the evolutionary stages of legal experience that can be observed in History and, at the same time, obliges to the observation of all legal realities and all the opinions of the world’s jurists. This truly scientific spirit, that exceeds national legal realities, is the spirit that moves our Law Faculty”.
